HMEMSA Medical Committee is planning a humanitarian mission to Ibn Tofail Hospital in Marrakech, Morocco in two phases. Phase I consists of a pilot project from July 6 to July 15, 2011 to form and train the code team of the Cardiac Unit of Hospital Ibn Tofail. Phase II is scheduled for the summer of 2012 to perform 15 heart operations to benefit underprivileged children. Our team consists of physicians, nurses, and members of the American Heart Association Instructors in Adult and Pediatric Advance Life Support.

Dr. Boumzebrra, the Director of the Cardiac Surgical Unit of Ibn Tofail Hospital, is our host in Morocco and is excited to have our team train his entire staff of 24 physicians and nurses on efficient and effective response to cardiac arrests in an organized manner. In addition, our team will work with the hospital staff on creating an emergency response system that fits the hospital needs and resources. We are hoping that this system could be duplicated in other hospitals in Morocco and save many lives that are lost due to lack of experience, knowledge, and organization.
